Brazilian
Jiu-Jitsu
Brazilian
Jiu-jitsu is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling
and especially ground fighting with the goal of gaining dominant
position by using chokeholds and joint locks in order to submit
your opponent. It promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker
person using leverage and proper technique can successfully defend
themselves against a bigger individual. BJJ permits a wide variety
of techniques to take the fight to the ground after taking a grip.
Once, your opponent is on the ground, a number of maneuvers are
available to manipulate your opponent into a submission. Achieving
a dominant position on the ground is one of the hallmarks of BJJ
, and includes effective use of the guard position to defend oneself
from bottom, and passing the guard to dominate from top position
with side control, mount, and back mount positions.
Mixed
Martial Arts
Mixed
martial arts (MMA) is a combat sport in which a wide variety of
fighting techniques are used, including striking and grappling.
The techniques utilized in mixed martial arts competition generally fall into
two categories: striking techniques (such as kicks, knees and punches) and grappling
techniques (such as clinch holds, pinning holds, submission holds, sweeps, takedowns
and throws).
A victory in a bout is normally gained by the judges' decision after an allotted
amount of time has elapsed, a stoppage by the referee or the fight doctor (in
the event that the competitor is injured or can no longer defend himself intelligently),
a submission, by a competitor's cornerman throwing in the towel, or by knockout.
