Brian
Miller has been involved in the martial arts for 18 years.
He started his martial arts career studying under Tim
Hoover in Kwon Ryu Fu Chi Do Karate in Whitehall, Pennsylvania,
which was a hybrid of several different styles of martial
arts: Tae Kwon Do, Shorin Ryu/Goju Ryu, Kung Fu, and Tai
Chi Chuan. Brian obtained a black belt in this art after
about 5 years. Also, during this time period, he trained
in boxing to improve his hand speed, punching combinations,
and punching power. |
While
training in boxing and obtaining his black belt in karate, he
decided that he needed to improve his grappling and ground fighting
skills. So he started training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with Craig
Kukuk in Princeton, New Jersey. After the very first class he
was hooked. Every week, he made the hike up Princeton to learn
BJJ and then practiced and taught what he learned to his local
training partners. BJJ quickly grew as his passion, and, it is
still what he primarily teaches to this day.
Brian has competed and coached in several events over
his BJJ career. When Craig Kukuk and Renzo Gracie joined
forces and opened a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Academy
in New York City, they held the first East Coast Grappling Championship. Brian
competed in this event and won first place for his weight class. He also competed
and won the same event the very next year in Philadelphia. A year or two later,
he competed in the New York Grappling Championships in the over 200 pounds class
despite only weighting 170 pounds at the time. He went on to win and submitted
all of his opponents. A couple years after this he decided to compete again and
fought in the Upstate Grappling Classic. Here he won first prize and was awarded
his trophy by Mark “The Hammer” Coleman.
Even after Renzo Gracie and Craig Kukuk decided to part ways, Brian continued
to learn and study from Renzo for many years. He eventually was awarded his black
belt from Renzo in the summer of 2004. Brian has taught Brazilian
Jiu-Jitsu for many years. Many of his students have won or placed in submission
grappling events across the country.
