A
typical Shotokan class will begin with a series of stretches
and warm ups. Directly following the warm up routine the instructor
will dictate to the class a series of line drills which are
performed by the entire class as a group upon the instructors
commands. Following line drills, one can expect to engage
in a type of cardiovascular training which can be done as
bag drills or, one on one contact drills. Some classes will
also involve a dedicated time to perform and practice kata
(forms or patterns of moves), which is a very important part
of Shotokan Karate. At the end of most classes the instructor
will request the class to put on their fighting gear and to
engage in sparring matches.
