Shotokan
karate was founded by Gichin Funakoshi, who in 1922 brought
his style to mainland Japan from Okinawa. Shotokan training
is divided into three parts: kihon (basics), kata (forms
or patterns of moves), and kumite (sparring). In 1961,
Teruyuki Okazaki, a student of Funakoshi, came to America
where he established the Philadelphia Karate Club. Okazaki
founded the ISKF in 1977 and was part of the JKA until
June 2007. Karate is a great way of learning self discipline,
control, and focus.
